On view at the LINE LA from November 1st through January 31st: Curtain for Earrings by Yoonjeong Lee, presented by GOBI.
Curtain for Earrings is presented at the LINE LA in tandem with Yoonjeong Lee’s solo exhibition, Heroes and Protagonists, at GOBI (1017 N Madison Ave, Los Angeles). In both presentations, Lee uncovers the underlying mechanisms that activate our interactions with familiar objects and creates a universe where the presence of the supporting roles are considered equally crucial as their leads. In Curtain for Earrings, earring holders, usually designed for function with little regard for aesthetics, are reimagined into canvases for expression. Even when the holders are not serving its purpose of holding earrings, they exert an aesthetic presence that expands the definitions around the flesh and the body. By combining various AI-generated images of skin, a series of “third skin” is generated, blurring the boundaries between body parts and types, as well as reality and the constructed.

Yoonjeong Lee is a Seoul based artist questioning the state of and criteria behind the dominant and the subordinate. By reimagining expected forms of quotidian functional objects – such as nails, hooks, chains, stationery, and furniture – Lee’s work disrupts hierarchies and categorizations that permeate in everyday objects and presents new perspectives on conventional value systems.
